Chair Painting Class

The purpose of the chair painting class was to transform a recycled chair into a piece of art. Six young adults signed up for this class, and were successful in transforming an old chair into that piece of art using paint their own imagination.

The process started by sanding down the chair to remove any finish that was left on it. The chair was then washed down to remove any built up dirt and also to remove the sanding residue. Then the painting process started. This is when I told the kids that this is where their imagination came into play. Some of the chairs were painted all one color but after several weeks, their ideas started to change. The kids had great ideas but didn't know how to get the ideas from their head to the chair. This is when I introduced sponges, dowel rods for making dots, tape for stripes. I also reminded them to think how their chair would look to someone that might be interested in buying it. Once the kids got the idea of what to do, the chairs just exploded with colors.
